The importance of internal communication
If you have worked with or for multiple departments within a theatre or arts organisation (as I have), you will know just how many challenges there are to get everyone to communicate and work together effectively and efficiently.
It is human nature to focus on the task in front of you and remove any other distractions. However, often this behaviour can lead to working in what has become known as a 'silo', where each team or department relies on themselves and their budgets alone to achieve their goals, almost to the detriment of the other teams or departments.
Whilst there are sometimes perceived benefits to this type of working environment, there are also significant drawbacks, some of which can be pretty significant.
Restricting the opportunities for communication between individuals or groups can significantly reduce the ability to collaborate or increase the cost of completing projects, sometimes simply because you are purchasing the same thing twice!
Allowing regular space and time for communication can result in the generation of new creative revenue ideas, improved use of hire-able spaces, cost saving ideas and most importantly - better understanding of what your colleagues are trying to achieve in their teams and how your team can help!
As with any successful relationship, communication is the key to success and will ultimately improve the effectiveness of the overall organisation.
Give it a go... you never know what might come out of it!
